Freight Corridor Planner

Compare sea, air, rail and road for your shipment on total landed cost, time and risk. Three steps: route, cargo, risk. The result updates as you go.

A free personal planning tool: figures are estimates, not quotes, and it is not an official tool of any institution.

1Route: where do the goods travel?

Choose the exporter's and importer's cities. Use ⇄ to swap roles.

2Container and load planner

Define what you ship. The planner loads it into each container type, prices the full route for each, and picks the cheapest.

3Corridor risk settings

Risk on each corridor changes with conflicts and circumstances, so you set it. Start from a scenario, then fine-tune any corridor in the detailed settings. Freight rates and transit times stay model-based.

      Method and sources

Sea freight is modelled per container as (base + rate × nautical miles) × a trade-lane factor, calibrated so Shanghai–Rotterdam, Shanghai–Genoa, Shanghai–Los Angeles and Shanghai–New York match the Drewry World Container Index of 1 Oct 2026 ($3,399, $3,702, $7,835 and $10,428 per 40ft). Other lanes are model estimates. Sea distance follows the drawn lane network; days use 15 knots plus port time, feeder transshipment and customs.

Road distances between cities and ports come from Google Maps (Shanghai city–Yangshan and Busan are estimates). Truck costs use regional per-km estimates plus border fees. Rail uses the ERAI China–Europe average of about $10,100 per 40ft (July 2026); Middle Corridor rates are estimates. Air uses a distance-based rate inside the 2026 Asia–Europe range of $3.20–6.50 per kg (source).

Risk: chokepoint status from carrier updates on the Red Sea and Suez and Hormuz war-risk premiums. War-risk surcharges, delay probabilities and insurance add-ons are model assumptions. Routes through Russia or Belarus are flagged for sanctions and excluded from the recommendation. The baseline risk settings reflect 11 Oct 2026; users can change every corridor's status and risk inputs, including closing a chokepoint, in Corridor risk settings. This tool gives planning estimates, not quotes; customs duties and taxes are not included.

Containers: typical ISO internal dimensions and maximum payloads (20ft 5.90 × 2.35 × 2.39 m, 28,200 kg; 40ft 12.03 × 2.35 × 2.39 m, 26,700 kg; 40ft high cube 2.70 m high, 26,500 kg). Carriers' boxes vary by a few centimetres and kilograms. Loading is calculated lane by lane, testing lengthwise and crosswise placement; it does not model weight distribution or securing. LCL pricing (per revenue ton, about 2.5 times the full-container rate per m³ plus freight-station fees) is a model assumption.
